Elton Tour
ELTON HISTORY TRAIL
The history group had a wonderful fun day out discovering more about the picturesque historic village of Elton, just a few minutes away from Yarwell Mill. Skies were a little grey with bright spells, giving us a good opportunity for exploring the Village.
At the start of the Trail in our allotted time slots in order to keep to social distancing regulations, we were offered a mulled wine and a festive treat before setting off in pairs, arriving and leaving 10 minutes apart, following clues to answer the many questions around the village. We followed the trail learning as we went some of the history and stories of the village and of some of the characters that had lived there.
The remains of Coopers hospital, the grade 11 water mill, the many historic houses the trail was packed with interesting information. One of the houses on the trail has an ancient staircase that came from Fotheringhay castle. The lock-up for prisoners held over-night that was housed in the Black Lion pub which also held inquests, a landlord who had once also been a hangman.
We got to know about the train station just outside of the village and the tragic story of Hannah Baxter who had been unfortunately killed by a train at the station. Is it Hannah who haunts the Wansford tunnel?
So many stories, so many lives still yet to discover.
The trail was just over 2 miles and we all felt we had got to know a little more of the delightful village of Elton. We all thoroughly enjoyed our individual time having fun looking for clues to answer the 40-question treasure trail quiz. We had two winners who got 39 of the 40 questions correct and received a tin of Belgian chocolate biscuits each.
We are so lucky to live in an area of such historical interest and beauty and surrounded by pretty villages to rival the Cotswolds.
