HISTORY OF THE WAR GRAVE COMMISSION

HISTORY OF THE WAR GRAVE COMMISSION

21st March 2023

The history group met at the historic Crown Inn at Elton for a talk of the history of the War Grave Commission, presented by Stewart McGeoch (better known as our wonderful postman).

Stewart is passionate on the upkeep and awareness of the commonwealth war graves and volunteers cleaning and visiting war graves.  His knowledge of the many battles particularly the Somme in the first world war was remarkable.  The tragic loss of life not only from the forces of the commonwealth and the enemy but of civilians too was appalling.  However Stewart was a wonderful speaker very informative on the history of the war grave commission.  He also entertained us with some of his stories while visiting war grave cemeteries which isn’t easy on such a sad subject.

Thank you Stewart for your dedication and passion, an inspiration to us all.

Thanks to the Crown and Elton for hosting our meeting and a very nice lunch.

Avril
